The process is similar to petal stitching with long and short stitches. However, in this tutorial you are going to learn and practice two more popular techniques in thread painting:
a) Mixing threads of different colors.
b) Adding darker or lighter shades and details with 1-strand thread.
Stitches:
Threads
1. Download and print the flower design. Transfer the design to the fabric with carbon paper. The design is simple and easy, so you can draw it directly on the fabric with a pencil.
2. Outline the design lines with split stitch using 2-strands of light pink thread (Anchor 74).
3. The petals will be filled with long and short stitches. Draw some guidelines from the outer outline towards the center. Use 2-strands of light pink thread (Anchor (74). Start from the center tip of the petal and work towards one side. Pass the thread over the split stitch ensuring a neat even edge. Subtly alter the direction of stitches to follow the curve of each petal. Do not make all the stitches the same length. Vary the length to achieve a more natural look.
4. After completing the one side stitch the other side starting again from the center.
5. Stitch the outer edge of all petals.
6. Stitch a second row using again 2-strands of pink thread (Anchor 74) overlapping and splitting previous stitches.
7. Now we are going to mix threads of different color together. We want to give to the heart of the flower a yellowish shade. To make the color more palpable and rich, we combine threads of different color. Thread the needle with one thread of pink (Anchor 74) and one thread of dark yellow (Anchor 303). Stitch the center with long stitches.
8. You need to add more detail to make the petals more distinguishable and three dimensional. Take one strand of the darkest pink (Anchor 76) and make long stitches at those areas that you want to add shades.
9. Finally take one strand of the darkest pink (Anchor 65) and stitch the very heart of the flower.
