If you think that symmetry is boring and obvious and you opt for more unexpected and abstract designs, then try this projects
1. Lets start with a typical pattern, the cross pattern.
2. Select some fabrics, for example a white, a black and a patterned. The patterned fabric was hand-dyed with tie and dye method, but you can use any other patterned or striped fabric.
3. Cut one square out of the white fabric and one out of the patterned fabric 4 1/4'' (11 cm). The squares include the seam allowance.
4. Lay the squares, one on top of the other, with their edges aligned. Sew 1/4 inch (5mm) from the edges by machine. With the roller cutter, cut diagonally both pieces, creating four triangles.
5. Unfold the triangles and you'll normally have four squares (around 3 inches wide each)
6. Cut the small triangles that exceed from the squares. Arrange the squares, to give the shape of the wind mill. Sew the pieces together creating a larger block of about 5 1/2 inch (14cm) wide. The block includes the seam allowance.
9. Arrange the wind mill block (step 5) and the two strips (previous step) side by side and sew them together.
10. Cut two squares out of the black fabric (5 1/4 inch wide or 14cm).
11. Cut two more strips out of the white and patterned fabric (3'' x 5 1/4'') (7,5 x 14 cm).
12. Arrange the two black squares, the patterned strip and the white strip, side by side and sew them together.
Make two of these rows.
13. Arrange the three larger strips one on top of the other, shaping the cross.
Converting the cross into an abstract composition.
You can modify almost any boring patchwork pattern into an abstract and unexpected composition. Let's see how this can be done. Add triangular fabric pieces next to the block edges converting the square into a diamond.
Turn the diamond at 45 degrees.
With the roller cutter, cut the pieces into narrower strips.
Rearrange the strips and sew them together.
