Cross stitch

Cross stitch is probably the most popular form of needlepoint, in which x-shaped stitches are used to form a picture. Cross stitch covers well both the front and the back of the canvas although it is more time-consuming that the diagonal stitches. Cross stitch does not disrort the canvas and it can be worked with or without a frame.

There are two basic working methods:
Method A: In this method you stitch a row of diagonal stitches and then you must return back to cover the previous stitches with diagonal stitches in the opposite directions. This methid is quicker that the other cross stitch methods and uses the smallest amount of thread.

Instructions:
1. Bring the needle up through the hole (1) and insert the needle down through the hole (2). Bring the needle back up through the hole (3) and down through the hole (4). Continue stitching until you finish the first row of diagonal stitches.

How to stitch a design
There are two basic methods to stitch a design.
A) The first form is called counted cross-stitch. To stitch a design, you must count the threads in each direction. The cross stitch projects are worked from a gridded pattern onto any count fabric and thus the count of the fabric determines the size of the finished project.
B) The second form is called stamped cross-stitch. The cross is done on designs printed on the fabric,

Notes:

  • It looks better when all top stitches slant in the same direction.
  • If you are stitching with hand-dyed floss it is recommended  to complete each cross as you go stitching than working half cross stitches across an entire row and then doubling back to complete the crosses.
