Blanket Stitch at the edge of the fabric

A blanket stitch is used to finish an unhemmed piece of fabric. The stitch is also used as a decorative stitch on an array of garments.

Instructions:
1. Start on the left side of the edge of the fabric. Pass you needle and knotted thread from the back to the front through point (1).
2. Bring the needle back, and pass it  again through the same point, from back to front.
3. Pull the thread but not too tight, to make a small loop.
4. Pass the needle inside the loop.

5. Pull the thread tight, finishing the first stitch.
6. Bring the needle to the back of the fabric, and pass it through point (2).
7. Pull the thread, but not too tight, to make a small loop.
8. Pass the needle through the loop.

9. Pull the thread tight to finish the second stitch.
10. Bring the needle to the back of the fabric, and pass it through point (3).
11. Pull the thread, but not too tight, to make a small loop.
12. Pass the needle through the loop.
13. Pull the thread tight to finish the third stitch.

Continue in the same way until you finish the edges of the blanket, tablecloth, scarf etc.
How to end the blanket stitch: To end the row of blanket stitches make another stitch at the top of the last stitch.

For a more sophisticated look, you can alternate the length of the vertical stitch as shown.
