Couching stitches are used to create lines or are placed next to each other to make a fill. Couching involves two threads two threads and needles: The laying thread, which is typically thick lays along the design line. The tying thread secures the laying thread to the fabric. The laying thread might be cord, metal thread, thick thread, knitting yarn, etc. The couching threads might be either the same color or contrasting colors.

1. Draw the design on your fabric with a pencil or transfer it with carbon paper. Bring the needle with the laying thread (purple) from back to front through point (a). Draw the second needle with the tying thread (yellow) to the right, and bring it from back to front.
2. Align the laying thread to the design line.
3. Cross the tying thread over the top of the laying thread and bring the needle to the back through point (2) to secure the laying thread to the fabric. The tying stitch is actually a very short satin stitch.
4. Bring the needle with the tying thread up, through point (3).
5. Bring the needle down through point (4) making a second small satin stitch. As you go, keep the laying thread taut.
Continue in this manner. Try to keep your stitches evenly spaced and perpendicular to the laying thread.
Apart from satin stitches you can also work with other stitches like french knot or cross stitch.
How to end the couching stitched line: Bring the needle with the laying thread from front to back. Turn the fabric with the underside facing up and pass the needle below a few tying stitches to secure the laying thread in place. Cut the thread.
